📅 July 21, 2025
We started the Monday morning with breakfast, packing up, and stepping into a cloudy gray day in Lucerne. But first — coffee. A flat white and a slice of chocolate cake at Café Nord felt like a good choice because, well, family travel.

The bus from the train station carried us past a beautiful old church before dropping us at the start of our climb to the Pilatus gondola station. We walked up hill past a church to the station, where we purchased tickets (Free with the Tell Pass) and boarded the gondola. Soon the city fell away behind us as we rose above steep forested slopes.

At the first stop, Krienseregg, we entered a mossy, rain-scented forest marked Willkommen Drachenmoor. The air was cool, and we could sense rain wasn’t far away. Jonas ran ahead, excitement outweighing the drizzle. The dragon-themed playground appeared like something from a medieval fairytale: wooden towers with red spires, swings, ziplines, and a merry-go-round. We explored until the rain arrived in earnest.

The next gondola stop, Fräkmüntegg, brought heavier rain and clouds curling around the mountains. Activities were mostly closed, but Jonas braved the Wipfelpfad — a narrow bridge of thick rope inside a net tunnel, suspended between trees. He grinned the whole way.

The Wipfelpfad felt like stepping into a storybook. A netted walkway carried us through the treetops, safe but just high enough to feel adventurous. Jonas darted ahead, bouncing with excitement, while Alina and I took in the stillness of the forest. Every few steps, a wooden platform opened up with little signs about red deer or lichen, but it was really cool to see him walking above the ground, eye-to-eye with the forest canopy.

Finally, the cable car carried us into the clouds toward the summit of Mount Pilatus. Even on a rainy day, the station buzzed with visitors. We found warmth and comfort in a cafeteria meal — soup, sausage, green beans, and fries — while the clouds parted just enough to tease the sweeping views Pilatus is known for.

Blue skies briefly broke through as we headed for Dragon World, an indoor adventure playground celebrating the mountain’s dragon legends. Jonas tried a dragon-flying AR game and we watched a short film about Pilatus’s history. Outside, the Dragon Path led us along rocky ledges, through caves, and up ladders, revealing glimpses of sheer drops hidden in the mist.

Instead of retracing our route, we took the world’s steepest cogwheel railway down to Alpnachstad. The descent — up to a 48% gradient — revealed alpine meadows, rocky cliffs, and finally the calm shimmer of Lake Lucerne. A short downhill walk through the lakeside village brought us to the pier, where we grabbed ice cream and beer before boarding our boat.

The ride felt familiar, echoing our Lake Brienz journey in 004 Boat Rides & Waterfalls, but the scenery was all new — scattered clouds, green hills, and turquoise water.

The boat stopped at several ports, gliding through narrow waterways and revealing charming lakeside towns along the way. As we drew closer to Lucerne, the sky grew darker and the rain began to pour. Most passengers stayed sheltered under the covered deck, but Alina and Jonas ventured outside, braving the downpour with an umbrella and raincoat.

Back on shore, music drifted toward us from the Lucerne Culture and Congress Centre — we had wandered straight into Luzern LIVE.

Luzern LIVE is a free, open-air music and cultural festival happening from July 17–26, 2025 around the heart of Lucerne and its beautiful lake basin. Expect a lively mix of local bands, international artists, and pop-up concerts in the streets and public spaces—perfect for families and casual wanderers alike. Food stalls sent out irresistible aromas of sizzling sausages, dumplings, and more.

We crossed the Seebrücke bridge over the Reuss River and wandered into Old Town Lucerne — storybook streets lined with painted facades, cobblestone lanes, whimsical fountains, and fairytale churches.

The Chapel Bridge, Europe’s oldest truss bridge, carried us past its 17th-century paintings and the historic Water Tower.

Hunger eventually pulled us back toward the festival. Jonas devoured a bratwurst from “Alpler Magronen: Swiss Burger,” Alina enjoyed Korean dumplings, and I went for BBQ Pulled Beef Fries from Pommes Atelier — golden Belgian fries piled high with smoky-sweet pulled beef, creamy mayo, and fresh onions. Every bite was festival comfort food at its finest.

The festival’s smart token system impressed me — return your cup and token for 2 Francs back, keeping the grounds spotless. We wrapped up the evening with gelato, a walk home via the Migros grocery store, and fresh orange juice pressed before our eyes by a vending machine that juiced real oranges in seconds.

It was a day of contrasts — alpine mist to city rain, dragon legends to live music, and quiet gondola rides to the buzz of Old Town. And through it all, Jonas stayed brave and optimistic, ready for each new turn.

🧳 Parenting & Perspective
Travel days with kids can be unpredictable — weather changes, tired legs, and missed activities are inevitable. But compromising on sweet treats (like that morning chocolate cake) and celebrating small wins made the difference today. Jonas’s willingness to explore, even when tired, was a reminder that sometimes attitude matters more than sunshine.
🏛️ Travel Tips
- Pilatus tickets: Check if your pass (like the Tell-Pass) covers gondola, cogwheel, or boat rides — it can save a lot.
- Dragon Path safety: Parts have ladders and ledges — good shoes and caution are key with kids.
- Festival dining: Luzern LIVE’s token system saves on waste — keep your token until you’re ready to return your trash.
- Old Town stroll: Cross the Seebrücke first for the best approach toward the Chapel Bridge views.
