015 Farewells & Fondue

A misty send-off, drone flights, tears at Allmendhubel, and a disappointing fondue dinner.

📅 July 19, 2025

We knew this day would come.

After 15 unforgettable days in Mürren, today was our final full day in the village that had become our alpine home. The forecast called for clouds and rain, but we weren’t ready to say goodbye just yet.

We started slow, savoring one last breakfast with a balcony view. Then we strolled once more to InSports Café for our family favorites — a flat white for me and a Kiddycinno for Jonas (still 60% whipped cream). He played in the toy room while I sat outside with my journal and a warm cup, reflecting on how much we’d grown as a family in these mountains.

Next, we took the funicular up to Allmendhubel — a fitting final destination. Jonas darted straight to the water table, already splashing and experimenting like it was his personal alpine laboratory. I took a quieter path, hiking up a grassy slope just above the playground to get one last elevated view of the park. The sky was turning moodier by the minute, but there was still a break in the clouds — just enough light and drama to make a final drone flight worthwhile.

I launched the drone from a quiet patch away from the crowds, trying to be as discreet as possible. It hummed into the sky, capturing sweeping shots of the rolling green hills, the wooden play structures below, and the jagged silhouettes of the Alps rising behind. Watching the tiny aircraft glide above the landscape felt like a metaphor — one last look before we flew off too.

As I landed the drone and began to pack it up, something caught my eye: a simple plastic water bottle left on a bench. But this wasn’t just any bottle — the base had been molded to resemble a Swiss mountain, complete with sharp peaks and textured ridges. It was such an unexpected design detail, and yet, so perfectly Swiss.

As the drizzle began, we all felt it — the weight of leaving. Jonas didn’t want to go. None of us did. We hugged Allmendhubel goodbye and rode the funicular back down, wet and quiet.

We stopped by Stägerstübli to reserve a table for our farewell dinner and picked up a souvenir umbrella along the way.

Back at the apartment, the clouds lifted briefly, just enough for us to take an evening walk and admire the goats grazing the slopes. The rain, it seemed, knew how to time its exits too.

Dinner, though, didn’t go as planned.

I had been craving fondue. This was the restaurant. The final meal. The perfect goodbye. But when we arrived at 5:00, we learned fondue isn’t served until 6:00. Cue collective frustration. I was disappointed. Alina was frustrated by the prices. Jonas was upset because we were.

Eventually, the kind waitress offered raclette instead. It wasn’t what we hoped for, but it was warm, cheesy, and comforting in its own right. The food helped reset our moods, and we walked home through the fading light, hearts a little heavier.

Mürren had become more than a place — it had become part of us.

Tomorrow, we’d leave for the next chapter. A new kind of adventure.

But first, we said goodbye.

🏙️ Highlights of the Day

  • Drone over Allmendhubel – Cloudy but cinematic, with Jonas in his element at the water table
  • Emotional goodbyes – Tears on the funicular ride down as we left our favorite alpine playground
  • Fondue fail turned raclette recovery – A dinner that almost fell apart, but somehow stitched itself back together

🧳 Parenting & Perspective

It wasn’t just the rain that brought tears.

After two weeks of high-altitude magic, we had to face the ending — and endings are hard. But as a family, we’re learning that even disappointment can bond us. We don’t just grow closer through joy, but also through shared letdowns and small recoveries. Today reminded us that beauty can sit side-by-side with frustration.

🏛️ Travel Tips

  • Allmendhubel Park: Accessible via funicular from Mürren. Great for kids and drone-friendly on quieter mornings.
  • Drone Etiquette: Fly early, fly respectfully — and enjoy those moody alpine views.
  • Stägerstübli Restaurant: Call ahead if you want fondue — melted cheese dishes begin at 6:00 PM.
  • Souvenir Idea: Mürren umbrellas are both functional and memorable. Ours now has a story.
