009 Rain & Revelation

Making the most of a stormy day with caves, gelato, and parenting perspective near Lake Thun.

🌍 The Journey

Rain loomed over the mountains on Sunday morning, so we pivoted from peaks to something underground: the legendary St. Beatus Höhlen Caves near Lake Thun.

Our morning began with a now-familiar ritual—saying hi to the village’s black cat, Jonas’s favorite fuzzy neighbor. From there, it was the usual commute: Mürren’s train and cable car, down to Lauterbrunnen, through Interlaken, and finally a lakeside bus ride to Beatushöhlen.

After climbing a steep switchback path up the mountainside, we reached the restaurant and cave entrance. With sweeping views of Lake Thun shimmering below gray skies, we shared a picnic and a plate of fries on the patio. Then we stepped inside the caves.

Walking through St. Beatus Höhlen feels like entering a secret world—cool, shadowy, and ancient. Water echoes through limestone corridors. Soft light glints off stalactites and glittering rock curtains. Each bend in the trail reveals a surprise: smooth cathedral walls, reflective pools, and soaring columns carved by water over millennia. One massive chamber is called the Dragon’s Lair—a nod to the local legend of Saint Beatus slaying a dragon in these very caves.

Jonas wasn’t too impressed at first. Dark caves and slow walking? Not his jam. But we tried to keep him engaged, tossing in Hobbit references: “Stay on the path, Frodo,” we joked. A little imagination goes a long way. Still, his favorite part? Definitely not the cave…

On the way back down, we stopped at the dragon-themed playground tucked below the cliffs. Jonas ran, climbed, laughed, and made fast friends with a couple other traveling kids. It was the moment he needed—and, truthfully, the one we did too.

Back in Interlaken, ChatGPT pointed us to Gelateria Azzurra, which became our new favorite. The day ended with window shopping through multicultural streets and the discovery of Coop’s pre-made pizzas (a game changer). As the rain returned, a double rainbow appeared outside our window—an exclamation mark on a day that started with detours and ended in delight.

🏙️ Highlights of the Day

St. Beatus Höhlen Caves – A kilometer-long trek into echoing chambers, glittering stalactites, and mythic dragon lore.

Dragon Playground – A much-needed stop to recharge Jonas (and ourselves) with fresh air and play.

Interlaken Wander – Gelato, window shopping, and rainbows to end the day.

🧳 Parenting & Perspective

Not every day is perfect. When rain scrambles your plans, it’s tempting to push through or stay home. But days like these remind us: the detour can become the destination.

Walking through dark, cool caves isn’t at the top of an eight-year-old’s wishlist. Jonas trudged through at first, unimpressed. But we tried to reframe it — dropping Hobbit references (“stay on the path, Frodo”) and pointing out dragon lairs and crystal pools.

Still, the cave wasn’t his favorite. What was? The dragon playground just outside — climbing, laughing, and connecting with kids from around the world.

This is the rhythm of travel with kids: trade-offs, imagination, and meeting each other halfway. And honestly, watching him run around with joy made the rainy trek worth it.
